Lara is a painter, illustrator and curious observer. She has a BFA in Painting with a minor in Art History and concentration in Fibers from Colorado State University (CSU) and a MFA in Children’s Literature, Art and Oral History from Gallatin at New York University (NYU).
From a very early age, Lara has been obsessed with painting, sewing and children’s books. Her illustrations are made using primarily collage, integrating watercolor, gouache, and embroidery.
She gathers ideas from urban and Atlantic textures, botanicals and old Polaroid photos. Lara integrates memories of imagery from artifacts, patterns and paintings inspired by the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art where she taught children for many years.
She is also a collector of small things: beach stones, sea glass, art and vintage postcards, embroidery thread, fabric swatches, anything panda and old buttons.
